Why Foreign Geological Material Should not be introduced at a Conservation Reserve

Dr Jeff Yugovic has recently published an article on the consequences of introducing foreign geological material in conservation areas.

If you have recently visited Frankston Nature Conservation Reserve you would be aware of the introduction of concrete, paving and granitic sand to the previously natural walking tracks. Some of the tracks have been widened, and had the fall of the land altered including the introduction of containment walls. The natural seed bank – the source of conservation – has been removed. Troublingly, much of the seed bank can be seen in piles next to the foreign material which has been introduced and now washes into the water body.

Altering the natural flow of water courses within the reserve, the survival of plant and insects reliant on these natural flows is at risk.

Parks Victoria do not have the necessary qualifications in conservation management and should not be making environmentally damaging decisions. This reserve is a case example of poor management, which has clear evidence of the destruction caused by Parks Victoria
