The mission of the “Frankston Nature Conservation Reserve Guardians” is to support the Victorian Government and other agencies in the creation and maintenance of a world-class conservation reserve for the long-term benefit of Victoria, centred on the Frankston Nature Conservation Reserve.

Together with the Committee of Management our ultimate restoration goal is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem representative of the state that existed in Australia approximately 1000 years ago.

We use the term ‘representative’ because there are limitations to full restoration, such as species that have since become extinct and exotic species that cannot be controlled or excluded. The context in which we are working has also irreversibly changed. What was once part of a vast unbroken ecosystem is now essentially a 90ha island surrounded by residential dwellings.

We aim to create a fenced safe haven as free as possible of non-native species.

Our aims and objectives are to:

  1. Enhance the core conservation function of the Frankston Nature Conservation Reserve (hereinafter called the “Reserve”) by working with the Victorian Government and other agencies in restoring the habitat, protecting endangered species, promoting biodiversity and enhancing habitat linkages both within the Reserve and beyond;
  2. Maximise public involvement in the management of the Reserve by encouraging and coordinating relevant community activities;
  3. Encourage and promote cooperative arrangements with owners and managers of neighbouring land with the Reserve’s managers to enhance the Reserve’s value as a core conservation resource and to ensure that this value is not compromised by inappropriate land use activity nearby;
  4. Encourage and coordinate research and interpretational and educational projects based on the Reserve and nearby lands and waters;
  5. Conduct artistic and cultural heritage activities supportive of, and benefiting from, the Reserve;
  6. Liaise with local government and other conservation agencies operating in Victoria on environmental and conservation issues;
  7. Establish and maintain a public fund to be called the “Frankston Nature Conservation Reserve Trust Fund” for the specific purpose of supporting the Mission of the Association;
  8. Re-establish wild populations of representative fauna and flora and restore indigenous habitats.
  9. Get key natural processes such as species dispersal and gene-flow functioning once again.
  10. Gain knowledge and methodologies that can be applied elsewhere.
